Methodology for inspecting a person with a hand-held inspection metal detector
Methodology for inspecting a person with a hand-held inspection metal detector (metal detector).
Warning: follow the laws of the Russian Federation, the approved policy and procedure for inspecting people of your organization. This material is provided by ZAO "SFINKS" for advisory purposes.
- Maintain privacy during inspection. During the inspection, it is recommended not to touch the person being inspected with a hand-held metal detector.
- The SPHINKS hand-held metal detector is not an offensive weapon and should not be considered as such. The body of the SPHINX metal detector allows you to use it as a means of self-defense, if necessary.
- Before using the SPHINX metal detector, read the operating instructions. For more effective work with the metal detector to identify prohibited metal objects, it is necessary to conduct regular testing of personnel, activities to improve the qualifications and train security personnel and law enforcement agencies.
- When scanning a person, the hand-held metal detector should be at a distance of 5-10 cm from the body. Avoid touching parts of the body or clothing of the person being searched with the metal detector. However, in some cases, when searching a person in outerwear (down jackets, jackets, coats, etc.), it is necessary to bring the metal detector to the body of the person being searched at a distance of less than 5 cm to ensure the best quality in detecting metal objects.
- Use the SPHINX metal detector in the maximum sensitivity mode. An exception may be the case when the search is carried out near large metal objects (for example, a floor with metal reinforcement).
- A person should always be searched using the same algorithm and a clear sequence of actions.
The illustration below shows the most effective method of searching a person using the SPHINX VM-611 VIKHR hand-held metal detector as an example.
Description of the method of searching a person using the SPHINX hand-held metal detector.
1. Regularly during your shift, check the functionality of the metal detector by holding it to metal objects on your body (buckle, watch, etc.). Scanning at a speed of no more than 0.5 m/s, bring the metal detector to a local metal object. The activation of the metal detector (light and sound alarm) at a distance in accordance with the product passport will guarantee that the metal detector is working and you are providing an effective search.
2. Ask the person being searched to lay out all the metal objects that he has with him (keys, phone, coins, etc.). It is also necessary for the person being searched to remove the goal headgear and, if possible, large outerwear.
3. The person being searched should be facing the operator, with their feet at least 50 cm apart and their arms outstretched parallel to the floor.

4. Start at the top of one of the person being searched’s shoulders. Hold the metal detector horizontally and parallel to the front of the person’s body. Scan half of the front of the body from top to bottom to the foot*, move to the other foot and continue scanning the other half of the front of the body from bottom to top to the other shoulder, as shown in Figure 1. Please note that if the length of the sensor (active scanning area) of the metal detector is less than half the width of the person being searched’s body (e.g., the tactical metal detector model VM-311), the algorithm should be changed to increase the number of vertical passes with an offset so that the entire body surface is in the scanning area.

5. Pass the metal detector over the upper arm and move from the shoulder towards the hand. Move the metal detector to the lower hand and then move to the armpit. Scan the side of the body down to the foot, move the scanning part of the metal detector to the inner leg. Continue searching from the bottom up, moving to the opposite leg, and then, having reached the opposite foot, move to the outer leg and move up to the other armpit. Repeat the movements in the reverse order that you did with the opposite arm, as illustrated in Figure 2. Please note that no contact with the body of the person being searched is allowed during the scanning process.

6. Ask the person being searched to turn 360 degrees. The algorithm used for the face should be repeated for the back of the person's body in accordance with Figure 3.

7. If your inspection methodology (e.g. ICAO) requires a shoe search, refer to Figure 4. Ask the person being searched to lean on a table or any other object and raise their leg, bending it at the knee at a 90-degree angle, as shown in the figure. Scan the shoe from the sole side. Repeat with the other leg. If the shoe has metal insoles or other metal inserts, both feet should trigger the metal detector equally. The best option for searching shoes is to use an introscope.
8. Start scanning the head from the forehead and move across the top of the head to the neck. Go around the head so that its entire surface is scanned. Pay special attention to women with voluminous hairdos. Please note that during scanning with a hand-held metal detector, the head of the person being inspected should not be touched.
In the previous part of the inspection procedure using the SPHINX hand-held metal detector, we looked at the scanning process of the person being inspected. The next step will be the operator's actions upon detection of metal objects.
- When the metal detector signals the detection of a metal object and the operator does not visually observe the object of detection
(it is hidden under clothing, in hair, etc.), the following should be done:
1. Ask the person being inspected to present the object from the detection area for visual inspection by the operator.
2. Perform a re-scan of the detection area.
3. If the metal detector is triggered again, return to point 1. If there is no signal during re-scanning, the inspection should be continued according to the procedure.
An important requirement is a re-inspection of the area in which the metal object was detected and seized. Remember that the person being searched can put a phone, a metal business card holder or another object in their pocket, and “hide” a gun, knife or other prohibited item behind this object. The principle is simple: detection – seizure – visual inspection – re-scan the location of the object, and so on, possibly several times, until the metal detector signals the detection of metal objects.
Also pay attention to the following recommendation: the operator must perform a visual inspection of the detected object and make sure that it was the object that triggered the metal detector. For example, if the metal detector was triggered in the wrist area and the person being searched claims that it is a watch that is under their shirt, the operator should ask the person to lift their sleeve to see the object. If the watch is large, you should ask them to take it off and re-search the wrist area if it is hidden by clothing.
- If a stationary frame metal detector is used as part of the security system at the facility, and it triggers an alarm when an inspected person passes through, then regardless of the number of controlled zones and the number of active detection zones, conduct an inspection with a hand-held metal detector in accordance with the full algorithm of this inspection method. If one object is detected, do not stop the inspection process and complete it in accordance with the described algorithm.
- As a rule, on the middle part of the human body, in the waist area, there are metal objects such as buckles, large metal buttons, snaps or metal zippers. If a metal object is detected during scanning of the front part of the person being inspected, then two options for further action are offered:
a) The operator must ask the person being inspected to pull and turn outward the inner part of the belt and the belt buckle, if there is one, so that the operator can make sure that there is no metal object behind the belt or strap.
b) The operator must ask the person being inspected to unfasten the belt and move the buckle away from the place where the metal detector was triggered. Then the operator must re-scan the trigger area. If an object is further detected in the specified area, in accordance with the laws of the Russian Federation, a personal search must be carried out in a separate room.
